The building
Cann's, the drapers, built on this corner of Swanston and Little Collins streets in 1919–20. Nahum Barnet designed it and the Reinforced Concrete & Monier Pipe Co built it, adding a storey while it went up. In the 1930s Marcus Barlow took it higher, and his floors swap Barnet's cement ornament for vertical ribs and a zigzag parapet. The curved corner bay and first-floor balconette remain. It has been apartments since 1998.
