City Point
The building
City Point is an apartment tower built in the early 2000s by Central Equity, set back behind two warehouses at the west end of Bourke Street. The older, from 1879, was built for woolbrokers P.B. Curtain & Co. to John Flanagan's design, with a ground floor of Malmsbury bluestone. Its neighbour was designed by Charles D'Ebro for Dalgety & Co. in 1912, and from 1925 was the city base of H.V. McKay's Sunshine Harvester company.
In brief
- 1879Wool warehouses for P.B. Curtain & Co. are finished to John Flanagan's design, at a cost of £12,000. The firm is insolvent by October.
- 1912Charles D'Ebro designs a motor garage with offices next door for Dalgety & Co. F.E. Shillabeer builds it.
- 1925H.V. McKay, maker of the Sunshine harvester, takes the Dalgety building as its city premises.
- 1945An extensive fire in the former Dalgety building; about £11,000 is spent reinstating it.
- 1994The National Trust classifies both Bourke Street warehouses.
- 2001Central Equity has almost sold out the City Point apartments off the plan. The tower is built behind the two frontages over the next two years.
